Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6(n-3)) is the most abundant omega-3 PUFA in the human brain and promotes normal brain, eye, and nerve development. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5(n-3)) is the main precursor in eicosanoid metabolism and regulates neuronal and immune processes by influencing gene expression. Numerous clinical and observational studies in humans suggest a link between infant neurological development and immune disorders and a deficiency in EPA and DHA, as well as an imbalance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Currently, <10% of children receive the recommended intake of EPA and DHA. Therefore, supplementation with DHA as well as EPA is essential to support optimal neurocognitive, neurobehavioral, and immune function during childhood.
