Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) is native to Canada and the United States. It has been used traditionally in herbal medicine to ease nervous tension, relieve muscle and joint pain associated with rheumatic conditions (such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and/or fibrositis), and of pain associated with neuralgia (such as sciatica). Black cohosh has also been used traditionally to help relieve the pain associated with menstruation and relieve symptoms associated with menopause and premenstrual symptoms. Its ability to alleviate symptoms of menopause has been studied in randomized controlled clinical trials. A part of this effect can be attributed to the high content of triterpene glycosides in black cohosh, which may help reduce levels of luteinizing hormone and activate dopaminergic receptors.
